The genus Malus apples were first cultivated in the eastern and
southwestern regions of Asia Minor. From there, they spread throughout
Europe, improved through selection over a period of thousands of
years. In 300 BC, Alexander the Great found dwarfed apples in Asia
Minor and brought them to Greece. Modern apples resulted from the
natural hybridization among various wild species. They were well
established in Greece by 800 BC. The apple tree was introduced to
Britain in Roman times and from there to North America, with later
commercial development in South America.
Description:
Granny Smith and Red Delicious are the principal varieties cultivated
for drying in Argentina. Granny Smith is used for all types of product,
including conventional, unsulfured and organic, because of its distinctive
sweet tart taste. Red Delicious and Granny Smith apples are both
used for organic production. Argentina is one of the very few producing
countries of dried apple products that can offer the full range
of conventional, unsulfured and certified organic products. By virtue
of their superior color and ability to maintain it, Argentinean
apples are premium quality, fully comparable to premium apples of
any origin.
Apples are a good source of the B vitamin biotin, as well as a
variety of minerals including magnesium, iron, chromium and manganese.
